The Guardianship
The Promised Mahdi (may Allah hasten his relief)
Belief in Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his relief) in the Imami school is the fruit of the system of divine oneness, prophethood, and imamate; the existence of an infallible proof in every age is a requirement of divine grace, and his occultation is a preservation of the seal of the successors until the moment of his advent and the establishment of justice arrives.
The Promised Mahdi (may Allah hasten his relief)
Proceeding from the doctrinal premises and rational assessments we established in the studies of divine oneness, prophethood, and imamate, it becomes clear to us that the movement of human history is not futile; rather it is a purposeful march proceeding according to a firm divine plan. In this study we arrive at the final fruit of this epistemic continuum, demonstrating the inevitability of the existence of Imam al-Mahdi (aj) and dismantling the problems raised about his occultation and his identification from the perspective of epistemology and the integrative scientific method.
1. From Creation to the Message: The Necessity of Infallibility and the Unity of Religion
We established in the studies of divine oneness that Allah, glorified and exalted, is the Creator of this universe and the One who brought it into being from nothing, and that He did not create the human being in vain, but brought him into being for a supreme purpose: epistemic perfection, spiritual elevation, and attaining nearness to the Divine.
Since the human intellect is, by itself, incapable of grasping the details of this perfective path, divine wisdom required the sending of the messages and the appointment of prophets to be guides to Allah. From here we arrive at two truths:
- The Unity of Religion: Religion in the sight of Allah is one, from Adam (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.) to Muhammad (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.), its essence being submission to the Absolute and steadfastness upon the truth; the laws and paths (shari’as) merely multiply with the multiplicity of the awareness of the nations and their needs.
- The Necessity of Infallibility: The messenger who bears this religion must, rationally, be infallible — pure and unblemished in his thought, his conduct, and his conveyance; for without infallibility and divine protection from errorinfallibility and divine protection from error — pronounced ‘IS-mah’ — العصمة The Arabic term is Isma. In Shia theology, it means God's protection from sin, deliberate error, forgetfulness that would damage religious guidance, and misguidance. For prophets and Imams, it safeguards the reliability of revelation and guidance. the trustworthiness of the message collapses, the purpose of the sending is nullified, and the contradiction of the objective becomes impossible for the absolutely Wise.
2. The Succession After Prophethood: Why the Imamate of the Household (AS)?
With the death of the seal of the Messengers (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.), divine revelation was cut off, but humanity’s need for the comprehensive and enduring message did not end. Here reason raises a decisive problem: the absence of infallible leadership immediately upon the departure of the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.) would inevitably mean the loss and distortion of the message; for the Quranic text bears many faces, and human interpretations are subject to interests, desires, and tribal and political tendencies — as we established in reality in the studies of the harvest of deviation and the nation’s fighting over power and creed.
Therefore, the continuation of the perfective purpose requires the existence of an imamate as an extension of prophethood, undertaking the preservation of the religion from distortion, its interpretation, and its application. And according to the law of correspondence and the doctrinal criteria, this leadership must be within the House of Prophethood (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.) and none other; for they are the most knowledgeable of the revelation, the most learned in the Sunnah, and the purest in conduct, and they never prostrated to an idol, so they were the pure legitimate and actual extension of the original Muhammadan Islam.
3. The Proofs and Demonstrations of the Necessity of an Infallible Imam’s Existence in Every Age
Based on the foregoing, no age can be devoid of an infallible proof of Allah over His creation. This inevitability can be reinforced by several coherent rational and transmitted demonstrations.
The Demonstration of Continuous Divine Grace
This demonstration holds that Allah, exalted is He, out of the decrees of His grace toward His servants, draws them near to obedience and distances them from disobedience. The function of the infallible Imam is not confined merely to conveying the rulings; it includes preserving the religion, applying justice, and guiding the nation spiritually and existentially. And since divine grace is obligatory, continuous, and uninterrupted, the existence of a living proof in every age is the very instance of this grace.
The Demonstration of the Purpose of Creation and the Intermediary of Emanation
The world subsists only upon a perfective purpose. In Islamic philosophy and gnosis, the the Perfect Humanthe Perfect Human — pronounced ‘al-in-SAAN al-KAA-mil’ — الإنسان الكامل Pronounced: al-Insan al-Kamil. The Perfect Human is the person whose intellect, soul, character, and spiritual receptivity reach the highest human perfection. In Islamic philosophy and mysticism, the Prophet is the supreme example of this rank: fully human outwardly, yet inwardly connected to the divine guidance. is the final cause of creation and the existential intermediary for the emanation of Allah’s grace and mercy upon this world. Were the world devoid of this most complete and infallible exemplar, the purpose of the continuation of the universe would be nullified.
Expressing this content, it is related in the tradition:
“Were the earth to remain without an Imam, it would sink.”
The Quranic Demonstration: The Witness of the Age
The explicit text of the noble Quran affirms the accompaniment of a proof for all human beings in every age; the Exalted said:
“The Day We will call every people by their imam.” (Al-Isra: 71)
And He, glorified is He, said:
“You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide.” (Al-Ra’d: 7)
The warner is the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.), and the guide is the infallible Imam, continuous in every people and age until the establishment of the Hour.
4. The Great Dilemma: Where Is the Infallible Proof Today?
Up to this stage, the astute researcher may concede the rational necessity of the existence of the Imam and infallible leadership, but he collides with lived reality and poses the most important and most serious question: If the existence of the infallible Imam is a decisive necessity for preserving the religion and guiding humanity, then where is this infallible Imam of the Household (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.) in this age of ours?
The answer to this question does not proceed from emotions; it requires a methodical inference resting on rigorous scientific and historical stages, and it is directed exclusively at whoever believes in Allah and His Messenger (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.); for a debate about Imam al-Mahdi (aj) with the irreligious or the materialist is premature and outside the ordering of the ranks of the proofs.
The First Stage: Is There an Appointment and a Text from the Messenger (PBUH)?
The first step in the method is to investigate the founding texts of Islam. The conclusion settled among the researchers is: yes; the Messenger of Allah (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.) designated, in mass-transmitted instances, the identities of the Imams and their seal.
The Muslims of all their schools and sects agreed that the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.) gave glad tidings of the advent of a universal reformer from his progeny at the end of time, and they related hundreds of proofs and sound narrations concerning this. From the sources of the school of the Caliphs, the compilers of the sound collections (Sahih) and the Sunan reported texts, among them his saying (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.):
“If there did not remain of the world but a single day, Allah would send a man from my Household whose name agrees with my name, who would fill the earth with equity and justice as it had been filled with oppression and tyranny.”
And it came in the hadith of Umm Salama (28 BH–62 AH / 596–681 CE):
“The Mahdi is of my progeny, of the children of Fatima.”
And from the sources of the school of the Household (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.), the mass-transmitted reports overflow from the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.) and the Imams (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.) defining his detailed identity; he is the twelfth Imam, al-Hujja ibn al-Hasan al-Askari (aj), concealed from sight and stored away for the promised day.
The Second Stage: The Prelude to the Question of Actual Existence
Since the inevitability of the Mahdi’s existence has been established by the decisive prophetic proof and the foregoing rational proof, the central question emerges: where is this Imam now, in our present age? Here the Muslims divided into two fundamental views in identifying this existence:
- The view of the school of the Household (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.): The Shia hold that Imam al-Mahdi (aj) was in fact born in Samarra in the year 255 AH / 869 CE, that he is the son of Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.), that Allah has prolonged his noble life, and that he lives among the people with his living presence, bearing the attribute of actual imamate, but veiled in his title and identity in the occultation, until the circumstances for his comprehensive uprising are available.
- The view of the school of the Caliphs: The majority of Sunni scholars hold that the Promised Mahdi will be born at the end of time, shortly before the establishment of the Hour, and has not yet been born, but when he is born he will undertake that great reformative mission.
5. The Limits of the Tools and Epistemology: Why Does Pure Reason Not Possess the Right to Decide on Longevity?
Before assessing the Shia view and dismantling the objections of longevity and occultation, a dividing line must be set that prevents epistemic confusion when some try to make the question of a human being living for more than twelve centuries a logical and rational issue.
Demonstrative Reason and Its Limits
In epistemology, reason is the instrument for grasping universals and necessary rules, such as the impossibility of the coincidence of two contradictories. Reason here possesses no inherent logical instrument that would let it decide on the shortness or length of a human’s lifespan; for lifespan is matter subject to reality, history, and existential power — not an abstract logical proposition.
The Illusion of Rational Impossibility
Describing the prolongation of lifespan as a rational impossibility is a terminological ignorance; for the impossibility here is an ordinary, empirical impossibility — that is, something people have not grown accustomed to in their daily lives — not a categorical rational impossibility. Reason sees no logical obstacle to a human living thousands of years if the means of existential preservation are made available to him.
Therefore it is not valid to turn the subject into a logical battle, because the issue lies, in its specialty, outside the sphere of direct rational adjudication.
6. The Collapse of Confining Inference to the Quran Alone
When we enter the space of transmission, we find a group that tries to confine the proofs to the noble Quran and demands an explicit verse naming Imam al-Mahdi (aj) by his name, isolated from the noble Sunnah. This proposition represents a subversion of the structure of Islamic knowledge.
The Quran Roots and the Hadith Details
The noble Quran was revealed as a clarification of everything through universal rules and broad lines; it rooted the concept of the imamate and made it a continuous divine covenant that does not reach the wrongdoers, and it rooted the inevitability of succession. Allah, glorified is He, made the function of the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.) the clarification and detailing of the Quran’s summaries; the Exalted said:
“And We revealed to you the Reminder that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them.” (Al-Nahl: 44)
Just as the Quran summarized the prayer and the hadith detailed the number of its units and its times, likewise the Quran rooted the imamate and the inevitability of the religion’s victory, and the noble prophetic hadith came to detail the identity of the Imams and to identify their seal by name, attribute, and occultation. So it is not possible to rely on the Quran alone; the noble hadith is the portion of transmission that accompanies the Book with an existential inseparability.
7. The Preliminary Quranic Indications: The Norm of Longevity in the Sacred Text
Allah, glorified and exalted, did not leave the question of longevity in the Quran to chance; rather He advanced witnesses and historical accounts documented by revelation to be an epistemic and doctrinal prelude for the believers, lest they deem it too great or too remote that Imam al-Mahdi (aj) should remain alive throughout these centuries by His preservation and care.
The Lifespan of the Prophet Noah (AS)
The explicit Quranic text breaks the ring of the lifespan familiar to humans, in the context of conveyance:
“And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years less fifty.” (Al-Ankabut: 14)
This is a decisive text on the possibility of the extension of the human lifespan for long centuries by a divine wisdom.
The Preservation of the Prophet Jesus (AS)
The generality of Muslims believe, by the text of the Quran, that the Prophet Jesus (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.) did not die and was not killed, but was raised up while alive and provided for in the divine unseen:
“Rather, Allah raised him to Himself; and Allah is ever Mighty, Wise.” (Al-Nisa: 158)
The Story of the People of the Cave
Allah suspended the ordinary course of time and biological decay upon their bodies while they slept for centuries without food or drink:
“And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and added nine.” (Al-Kahf: 25)
The Story of the Prophet Made to Die for a Hundred Years
The Exalted said:
“So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then revived him… So look at your food and your drink; it has not spoiled.” (Al-Baqara: 259)
This makes clear that time is a created thing, governed by absolute divine power.
These Quranic indications establish, for the believer in the Book, that longevity for the preservation of the proof is a divine norm, current and historical, that recurred for the preservation of the prophets and the righteous, and ran in the seal of the successors (aj) for the purpose of realizing the greatest cosmic promise.
8. Dismantling the Riddle of the Occultation and the Absence of Early Intervention
The divine occultation proceeds according to a wise course that is integrated across multiple dimensions.
The Degrees of Tyranny and the Completion of the Argument
The precise prophetic phrase says:
“as it had been filled with oppression and tyranny.”
Tyranny has degrees; and divine wisdom requires that the unseen not intervene decisively until humanity reaches the peak of its travail, exhausts all its human ideologies and their theses, and proves its complete incapacity to realize justice. At that point the intellectual receptivity of humanity to accept the divine alternative is completed.
Psychological Readiness After the Ring of Deviation
The occultation is the direct result of the foundational deviation that struck the nation after the passing of the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.), when the nation sidelined its legitimate rulers and subjected them to persecution. And since Imam al-Mahdi (aj) is the bearer of a cosmic project to change the face of the earth, his advent is conditioned upon the preparation of the nation and humanity and the availability of a conscious base. When the nation realizes the sterility of the alternative options and acknowledges the return to the original Muhammadan Islam, the real ground is completed for Allah to permit the advent.
The Devotional Dimension and the Intellect’s Submission to the Unseen Text
Behind all these rational attempts, there remains an epistemic principle: the details of the timing and the secrets of the occultation are devotional matters received exclusively through truthful revelation, for His saying, exalted is He:
“And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it.” (Al-Hashr: 7)
And Allah, glorified is He, is not obliged to present to humans an accounting that explains the details of His existential wisdom.
9. The Riddle of the Benefit: What Is the Role of the Imam in the Age of Occultation?
To dismantle the problem of the benefit of a veiled Imam, the scholars divide the role of Imam al-Mahdi (aj) into existential and narrated dimensions, relying on the famous prophetic likening of him to the sun when the clouds veil it.
The Existential Role: The Intermediary of Emanation and Cosmic Security
The existence of the infallible Imam is the existential channel for the emanation of Allah’s grace and mercy upon this world and its subsistence. Expressing this content, it is related in the tradition:
“Through us Allah holds back the heaven from falling upon the earth, except by His permission.”
The Spiritual and Epistemic Role: The Hidden Support
The Imam exercises an inward guidance that flows into the hearts of the believers, and he intervenes in a hidden manner to preserve the general line of the nation and protect the Sharia from total extinction. It came in his letter to Shaykh al-Mufid (336–413 AH / 948–1022 CE):
“We are not neglectful of your care, nor forgetful of your remembrance; were it not for that, calamity would have descended upon you and the enemies would have extirpated you.”
The Psychological and Social Role: The Centrality of Hope
Belief in the existence of a living leader prevents society from falling into the trap of despair and dejection, and transforms waiting into a positive movement and a continuous readiness for the nation to reach maturity and the actual preparation for the state of justice.
10. Assessing the Sunni View: The Structural Flaw in the Hypothesis of a Future Reformer
When the Sunni reading is subjected to methodical assessment, structural problems emerge that show its unrealism and its contradiction with the foundational rules of prophethood and imamate.
The Dilemma of Self-Awareness and Proof
The Sunni view supposes that an ordinary man reaches the age of forty, whereupon Allah reforms him in a single night so that he knows he is the Mahdi. So how will he know himself? If it is said: by revelation, then revelation was cut off with the death of the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.). And if it is said: by dreams and unveilings, then these are conjectural proofs upon which no obligation at the level of leading the world can be built.
The dilemma of proving that to the nation also emerges: how will the nation distinguish between him and the thousands of lying claimants who bear the same name or claim the same station?
The Dilemma of Scholarly and Epistemic Authority
Imam al-Mahdi (aj) is not an ordinary political ruler; he is a reformer who adjudicates on creeds over which the Muslims fought for centuries. So from where will he learn this absolute knowledge without error or slip? He, according to this view, did not inherit it, generation from generation, from the pure Imams (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.), nor did he receive it by revelation, since it was cut off.
The Structural Contradiction Between Delegation and Infallibility
The Sunni reading finds itself before two choices: either it acknowledges that Allah will support him with divinely-granted knowledge and unseen support that prevents him from error — thereby acknowledging for him infallibility and the higher stations, and drawing near to the Shia view; or it insists that he is an ordinary reasoning man who errs and gets things right — and here the rational demonstration collapses, for how can a non-infallible person relying on deficient human tools end the historical deviation and realize absolute and enduring justice for humanity?
This is an explicit breach of the demonstration of divine grace and wisdom.
11. The Unity of the Harmonizing Epistemic Bridge: Transmission Is the Basis for Understanding the Religion and History
The issue does not concern one sect apart from another; rather the entire Islamic and historical system in this age, after the passing of fourteen centuries, has reached us through the same epistemic bridge: truthful transmission and connected mass-transmission integrated with reason.
For all Muslims did not believe in the historical existence of the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.) and his progeny (ASAS — pronounced ‘alayhi as-salaam’ — عليه السلام AS stands for “peace be upon him / her / them.” It is the English abbreviation of the Arabic expression “alayhi / alayha / alayhim as-salam.” This expression is used after mentioning prophets (AS), the Imams (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Sayyida Zaynab (AS), Lady Khadijah (AS), and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) as a sign of respect.), nor in the details of their names and lives, through direct sensory perception; rather they believed in these because they were transmitted to them through decisive mass-transmission and connected texts, century after century.
When we apply the sound scientific method, we find two integrated stages:
- Receiving the truth by transmission: we take the text and the transmitted report which the reports mass-transmitted.
- Adjudicating the transmission by reason: after the arrival of the text, the role of reason comes to assess and examine it; it considers whether this transmitted matter is consistent with the universals of divine oneness, divine justice, and His wisdom.
The objector who accepts the foundation of religion, the Quran, and the biography of the Prophet (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.) through transmission and mass-transmission, then rejects the issue of Imam al-Mahdi (aj) on the pretext that it is transmitted and we do not see it sensorially now, falls into a glaring methodological contradiction; for the epistemic instrument that delivered to him the foundation of the Sharia — and which he accepted — is the very instrument that delivered to us the seal of His successors and His absent proof (aj).
Devotion to truthful transmission here is not an abolition of reason; it is a complete compliance with the command of reason, which led us to the door of infallible revelation and commanded us to believe it and adhere to its texts.
The Final Conclusion
The scrutinizing reading of history and doctrinal geography reveals a shining truth: the current map of the Islamic world is not a proof of the correctness of one school against another; it is a mirror of the school of the authority that was imposed throughout history by the force of the sword and political backing, from the moment the nation deviated at the Saqifa — where the nation sidelined its legitimate rulers and subjected them to killing and persecution, generation after generation.
To preserve the enduring proof from this bloody series and doctrinal falsification, and to protect the seal of the successors from inevitable liquidation, divine wisdom and the Lord’s grace required the occultation of Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Mahdi (aj); to be preserved in the unseen until humanity, and the believing nucleus within it, reaches the stage of intellectual maturity, doctrinal ripeness, and the bearing of responsibility, after the incapacity and failure of all deviant man-made systems.
Belief in Imam al-Mahdi (aj) and his occultation is not a departure from reason; it is the very summit of harmony between demonstrative reason and truthful, mass-transmitted transmission. He is the divinely-stored, promised one who will emerge to correct the long historical deviation, demolish the features of the religion of authority, and return the nation to the fountain of the original Muhammadan Islam, filling the earth with equity and justice after it had been filled with oppression, tyranny, and deviation from the first day of the departure of the Chosen One (PBUHPBUH — pronounced ‘sal-lal-LAAH-u alayhi wa aalih’ — صلى الله عليه وآله Peace and blessings be upon him and his family. This expression is used after mentioning Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an act of reverence and obedience to the Quranic command to send blessings upon him.).
Belief in Imam al-Mahdi (aj) is not a departure from reason; it is the very summit of harmony between demonstrative reason and truthful, mass-transmitted transmission.
